Boomwhacker Composition!

Boomwhacker Composition!

LOVE me some boomwhackers (can I get an “amen”, Kat Fulton?) 🙂

Boomwhackers are portable, durable, and good for addressing SO many goals and objectives.  The video below shows just one way I use them with my clients.

My client with Down’s syndrome is working on appropriate rhythm and timing in speech, taking turns, coordination, and gross motor skills — all of which can be addressed with this intervention.

What we did:

Taking out all of the color cards (either make your own, or buy them from West Music HERE), the client was instructed to set them out in whatever ordered she preferred.  Then, through independent choice-making and requesting, the client had her assigned boomwhackers by her side. This form of the composition was tried first, with shared responsibility between myself and the client.

To increase the difficulty and take the intervention one step further, I added my own composition of boomwhacker cards directly next to hers, which allowed for a true duet to take place!

With verbal prompts to take our time, breathe, follow one another, listen, and pay attention to the task at hand, she was successful in meeting all of these areas of need.
